Bernie Sanders Admonishes Cornel West, Calls for Unity Behind Biden

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has responded to criticisms from third-party presidential hopeful Cornel West regarding Sanders’ support for President Joe Biden in the 2024 election.

West criticized politicians for not being forthcoming about the state of the country, remarking, “they don’t really want to tell the full truth.” He questioned the praise for Biden’s economic achievements, stating, “[Biden has] created the best economy that we can get. Is this the best that we can get? You don’t tell that lie to the people just for Biden to win.”

Sanders, while conceding that the current economy is “certainly not” the best possible, emphasized the need for unity among progressives, especially given the stakes for democracy in the U.S.

He said, “Where I disagree with my good friend, Cornel West, is I think in these really very difficult times… I think we’ve got to bring the entire progressive community to defeat Trump or whoever the Republican nominee will be, [and] support Biden.”

However, Sanders stressed the importance of continued pressure on the Democratic Party, urging progressives to “demand that the Democratic Party, not just Biden, have the guts to take on corporate greed and the massive levels of income and wealth inequality that we see today.”
